Cloudberry Truffles from Åre Chokladfabrik (Sweden)
Åre Chokladfabrik is a small chocolate factory in a small town in central Sweden. They produce a large number of different chocolate truffles and pralines.
I decided to try their cloudberry truffles (“hjortrontryffel” in Swedish). Cloudberry is a yellow-colored berry which grows in northern hemisphere between 78°N and about 55°N, sometimes further south. It is popular in countries like Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Canada and Alaska. It is mostly used for making jam, but also for making liqueur, wine, juice and cakes.
The cloudberry truffles are made with a filling based on white chocolate and covered with milk chocolate. The filling is sweet and salty, and the flavor is somewhat fruity. It is difficult to recognise the distinct aromas of cloudberries, and the added salt makes it taste like salted butter. I thought, after my first bite, that the filling was a mixture of salted butter and cloudberry jam. So, in my opinion, the end product is not very successful. It should be possible to obtain a stronger cloudberry flavor.
